Diesels have remained important components in the Mercedes-Benz line in the U.S. A measure of the 300Ds acceptance in the market was Mercedes-Benzs decision to expand it from being offered just in a 4-door sedan to the 300CD coupe and then the 300SD supercharged sedan making 110hp and 300TD station wagon. The most significant model probably was 1975s 300D, an inline five-cylinder with just over 3 litres displacement, 77 horsepower and 115 lb-ft torque. The attractiveness of Mercedes-Benz diesels was enhanced by increasing engine sizes which brought their performance into a range acceptable to most American driver. Their reliability and longevity meant that an astute buyer who wasnt concerned about owning the latest model every few years could reduce the cost per mile over a ten or twelve year life to a very modest figure. Their economy was matched by increasing performance, particularly on the highway. It wasnt until the gas crises of the early 70s that diesels earned widespread respect. Diesels remained in the Mercedes offering from then on. Beginning with the 170D in 1949, a 38hp four-cylinder that made a virtue of economy, and little else. With a 120kWh battery pack, the large people mover is said to have a WLTP range of 750km.Īll three of these Audi Sphere concepts that have already been revealed were displayed at the Monterey Car Week in California, which has just wrapped up.Mercedes-Benz has consistently led the way with diesel power in the American market, developing a strong reputation and a following among consumers for whom economy and longevity matter more than performance. The Urbansphere concept has an electric motor for each axle, which together generate 295kW and 690Nm. Measuring in at 5.51m long, it’s the largest concept ever developed by Audi, and will be the brand’s largest-ever production car if it ever hits showrooms. It was followed by the Urbansphere concept, which previews an electric people mover that’s most likely destined for China. Total outputs are 530kW of power and 960Nm of torque, with a claimed electric range of over 750km according to WLTP testing and a 0-100km/h sprint time of just over four seconds.

It features a 120kWh battery and a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain. The second Sphere concept was the Audi Grandsphere concept, which previews an upcoming all-electric grand tourer flagship. The Skysphere concept has a lithium-ion battery with more than 80kWh, and a claimed range of more than 500km according to WLTP testing.

Under the skin is a rear-wheel drive electric powertrain with 465kW of power and 750Nm of torque, good for a four-second sprint to 100km/h. The first of the Audi Sphere concept family was revealed back in August 2021 with the Skysphere concept, which is a modern take on a classic roadster. Skysphere concept Credit: CarExpertĪudi has yet to reveal the concept’s interior but it’s safe to say it will be futuristic-looking and feature a steering wheel that can fold away for autonomous driving. The Activesphere concept in the teaser image has large wheels with triangular elements that are wrapped in all-terrain tyres, as well as flared wheel arches and a rugged-looking decal that runs along the side of the car. It looks somewhat like a lifted, more rugged version of the Audi e-tron GT as well. It’s expected the Activesphere concept will also be based on the upcoming, scalable Premium Platform Electric (PPE) that’s been co-developed by Audi and Porsche, and which will underpin upcoming models like the Q6 e-tron.Īudi has released a single teaser of the Activesphere concept and, from what can be seen, it looks like the concept is a high-riding sedan-like ‘crossover’ in the vein of the Peugeot 408 and Citroen C4 X. Like all the Sphere concepts thus far, the Audi Activesphere concept is all-electric and has been designed to be capable of autonomous driving.įor more Motoring related news and videos check out Motoring > Supplied Credit: CarExpert Audi is rounding off its family of Sphere concept vehicles with a fourth model, set to debut early in 2023.ĭubbed the Activesphere concept, this car will “offer maximum variability for an active lifestyle – both on and off-road”.
